Parkinson’s Small Group Training Program

At Highpoint Fitness, our goal is to always create a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere for anyone who wants to work out. We strive to find opportunities to get people moving to improve their mental and physical health.

One of our most recent initiatives is a Small Group Training Program for people who have Parkinson’s disease. According to the Parkinson’s Foundation, exercise can substantially improve the overall quality of life for people with Parkinson’s. In short, getting regular exercise is critical to managing the disease.

In our Parkinson’s Small Group Training Program, we focus on exercise that promotes aerobic conditioning, strength, balance, flexibility, and mobility. The program includes a Complimentary Fitness Startup Session with a Personal Trainer, which will help us understand how we can best help participants. The Fitness Startup Session includes a few important things:

  • The Personal Trainer will meet with the client to discuss topics to help the trainer gain knowledge about the client. Topics such as medical history, goals, strengths and weaknesses will be discussed.
  • The Personal Trainer will also take the client through a few functional movement tests to see how the client is moving.

The Fitness Startup Session is critical so we can take the necessary precautions for each client, based on their current level of movement and fitness.

Once the Fitness Startup Session is completed, the client can get started on our Parkinson’s Small Group Training Program, which consists of:

  • A 4-week Parkinson’s Small Group Training Program
  • Eight (8) 1-hour training sessions during the 4-week timeframe, with 2 scheduled sessions per week
  • A focus on the following goals: improve strength, balance, mobility, flexibility, and coordination

One of the participants of the program shared his experience:

“I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease three years ago. I tried the ‘Rock Steady’ boxing program, which was helpful until I injured my shoulder hitting the big bag. After completing physical therapy for frozen shoulder, I joined Highpoint and began working with a personal trainer, Grant Jansante. Grant’s expertise has allowed me to improve my core strength and balance along with adding muscle. He has also been flexible and creative, adapting my training based on any specific areas of concern (hip tightness, etc.) that I may have on any given day during our 2xweek sessions. Recently my physician informed me that there had not been any progression of the disease since my previous evaluation. Exercise is the only modality shown to absolutely slow the progression of Parkinson’s disease.”

We love to help people live their best life, and we are so thrilled to be able to offer the Parkinson’s Small Group Training Program. To participate, you must be a Highpoint Fitness member. If you or someone you know is interested in joining the program, contact our Personal Trainer Grant Jansante in person at the gym or at 412-230-1000.
